C.J. Critt -- Author & Performance Artist

A fifteen year member of the Dramatist's Guild, Ms. Critt's first writing efforts include ROCKBOUND, a science fiction musical, first read and optioned by Ensemble Studio Theater and later produced independently at the South Street Theater. Her first cabaret piece, ROMPED OUT, a rock n' roll predecessor to PEE WEE's PLAYHOUSE, was presented by Norman Rene at his Production Company, and at Lincoln Center Library Theater. Her ten-minute musical CAROLINE CHERNOWSKI was commissioned by Joseph Papp and The New York Shakespeare Festival. GOLD, a romantic comedy set during Olympic trials, was presented, in part, at the Edison Theatre by BMI's Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop. BES' TEXAS, her small cast musical spoof, written with bluegrass composer, Buddy Hale, received a late night run at The Pocket Sandwich Theater in Dallas, and can be currently seen in repertory on the Texas River Queen. Ms. Critt's solo shows, MANHATTAN DIARY and TALES FROM THE CRITT, have been presented in Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York City, prompting Bruce Gold of the L.A. Dramalogue to call Critt a "fine actress and gifted writer." Pieces developed experimentally at HOME for Contemporary Arts (through their 'No Shame' venue) later were woven into performances at Citi-Corp Center, the DUPLEX and Pulse Ensemble Theater, all in NYC. Her performance ensemble, Angry Girl Sextet, a "talking Band", has appeared at BIG ART in Small Places in New York, and at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and New York Literary Press; and in Dallas such venues as Clubs Clearview, DaDa, and the MAC. The Girls published their first writing collection RECIPES FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM in October, '97. Critt's solo effort, SMOKING LIPS, SPOKEN LIES, AND OTHER WORDS TO DREAM BY... was presented by the Dallas Theater Center as a feature in their "Big 'D' Festival of the Unexpected". SMOKING LIPS is also published in chap book form, and is on sale at selected Borders Books and Music. As Guest Artist at Ursaline Academy in Dallas, she created a spoken word piece for young women, CRITICAL MASS, and then staged the newly revised BES' TEXAS. Critt debuted her latest solo, CURSED WITH BIGNESS, at the popular South Western Literary Series, ARTS & LETTERS LIVE at the Dallas Museum of Art. C.J. curated FEMMATHON! in New York City. She produced and directed IDEA OF A WOMAN by Mary Ann Lightfoot at Frank's Place at The Dallas Theatre Center through the auspices of NATURAL BLONDE PRODUCTIONS. C.J.'s BEEKEEPERS, a provocative short play, was published in the anthology, BEST STAGE SCENES OF 1997. She wrote and produced "WORDS ALOUD! The Poetry Slam", featuring C.J. and the ANGRY GIRLS. WORDS ALOUD! has aired on ICTN in Irving, Texas; The Dallas Video Festival; and later went on to win a 1998 Cable Ace Award. As Co-Executive Producer of Natural Blonde Productions in 1998 (along with Molly Louise Shepard), Critt produced "A Month of Sundays", a festival of new works at "Frank's Place", at The Dallas Theatre Center, which included a concert staging of her newest musical, ALGONQUIN. (Natural Blonde Productions achieved non-profit status through the auspices of the prestigious organization Circum Arts Foundation in New York City.) ALGONQUIN is now in development at the CAP 21 Organization in New York City. This summer, C.J. had the honor of CURSED WITH BIGNESS being included in Soul Rep's new works series in Dallas. C.J. is a featured narrator for Recorded Books, Inc., and is also a staff writer for Radio Disney. CJ in NYC: ph. 212-695-9349 / 1-800-518-1812 Pager.
